The Joel Frahm Quartet Jazz Inform-ance and Clinics

Jazz, Classes/Clinics
A free Inform-ance (concert and Q/A) followed by saxophone, drum set, bass, and piano clinics. All students and public welcome. ARTISTS BIOS: Tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm has established himself as an improviser of formidable technique and rhythmic ingenuity, capable of burning at the fastest of tempos while still maintaining a sense of motivic development. Downbeat Magazine's critics' poll has named him a rising star. And fans know him for his big tenor sound that’s fluid, inventive, and filled with passion. A regular on the New York City club circuit, Joel has appeared alongside musicians such as Brad Mehldau, Bill Charlap, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Matt Wilson and has recorded with vocalists Diane Schuur, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, among many others. Few musicians embody the spontaneous energy of jazz like Matt Wilson. The New York-based drummer combines buoyant zeal, idiosyncratic style, infectious humor, joyous swing and an indomitable spirit of surprise. Together, with his universally recognized personal warmth, these qualities have made Matt one of the most in-demand players and educators on the modern jazz scene, both beloved and respected by his peers, elders and students. Ugonna Okegwo was raised in Germany and grew up listening to African-American music; James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, and Charles Mingus. Ugonna is one of the most distinctive and sought-after jazz bassists in the world. Critics across the globe have praised him for his rich tone, supple sense of swing, stylistic range, and inventiveness. Pianist/Vocalist/Composer & Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Jazz and American, Dawn Clement has established herself as one of the most sought after musicians working today. With her joyful presence, consummate technique and distinctive sound, Downbeat says “The revelation is Dawn Clement’s piano, is always ready with the lyricism or structure the moment needs.”

An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt

Country, Bluegrass, Jazz, Acoustic, Blues
Presented by SBL Entertainment Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt—two of America’s most admired singer-songwriters share the stage for an intimate acoustic evening of unforgettable stories and iconic songs. A singer, composer, and actor, Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel, and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo,’ with his ‘Acoustic Group,’ or his ‘Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any artist working today. Hiatt has always been a keen observer of life’s flings and foibles alike. Usually mixed well together, Hiatt’s insights and skills at sharing them have only sharpened over the years. He recently released his 22nd studio album, Terms of My Surrender, forty years into his recording career. Hiatt’s series of shows with Lyle Lovett, which he calls “our little Smothers Brothers comedy show,” has brought out other spins on his art, as well as elements already familiar to those who’ve been there all along. Alternately bemused and profound, Hiatt is a selfaware chronicler of both his own and others’ stumbles and epiphanies, the tales richer with each step forward.

Jabberwock

Classical Dance, Experimental, Modern
Presented by LED LED is returning to the Morrison Center for the Performing Arts in Boise, Idaho for the one-night-only premiere of their newest evening-length production: Jabberwock. For the past three years, LED has dazzled Boise audiences with their unique blend of athletic, contemporary dance, live original music, and film. Jabberwock, a contemporary adaptation of Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem “Jabberwocky”, uses the classic hero’s tale to create a world of suspense and whimsy, exploring themes of good versus evil, resilience, autonomy and truth. Set within a dystopian 1950’s inspired office space, we begin to see the balance of power shift as we’re left questioning who will flourish and who will escape this place to discover something greater beyond its mythical walls. Featuring a cast of world class dancers from throughout the United States, with choreography by Lauren Edson, and brand new original music by Andrew Stensaas, Jabberwock will be an evening you will not soon forget.

New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players: The Mikado -by- Opera Idaho

Comedy, Opera, Operetta
New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players return to The Morrison Center with their delightfully reimagined The Mikado. The most known and performed Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, The Mikado dates from 1885. Setting the operetta in Japan, an exotic locale far away from Britain, allowed Gilbert to satirize British politics and institutions more freely by disguising them as Japanese. NYGASP’s all-new production brings center stage the history and inspiration for the writing of The Mikado as the real life characters of Victorian London’s D’Oyly Carte Opera Company are combined with the imagined setting of Titipu, influenced by the art and architecture of Japan that had recently reached England in the late 19th century.
