Step into My Past: Life in a Basque Neighborhood Paintings by Frank Goitia March 15 - May 29, 2018 The 521 Pop Up Gallery The study of the relationship between emotion and memory is a growing field in the broader framework of Cultural Studies. Emotions and their various expressions play a central role in human interactions. However, since emotion-derived feelings are social constructs, they are molded differently by particular societies, cultures and realities. Gender, among other social factors, shapes the form of our emotions. The processes of social interaction are general, but women and men exert them differently. Meant to complement the Women's Stories: Constructing Meaning from Memory conference hosted by the Department of World Languages, World Languages, Step into My Past: Life in a Basque Neighborhood looks at memory and emotion from one man’s perspective. Artist Statement: I started painting in 1970 when I was a student at Boise State. One of my teachers said to paint what I know best –my life in a Basque boarding house in Boise, ID. My parents were the proprietors of the Royal Hotel –612 ½ Main Street – the current location of City Hall. My paintings are reflections of my memories of my past. The 521 Pop Up Gallery is located in the Boise State University Computer Science building, 777 W. Main St. Boise, 2nd floor
